The technological demands on products and processes of modern times get more and more extensive and complex. This is not only because of the new technological possibilities, but also due to the increasing limitations imposed by environmental sustainability.

On the other hand, the modern industrial world is on its way out of established structures. The change goes from holding all relevant departments internal available, to world wide operating external project groups. This mostly counts for the areas of marketing and research/development.
As both are creative disciplines and measurement of their profit-ratio is quite a difficult task, they are mostly observed as mere cost producing factors. Furthermore, phases during which no innovations or advertising campaigns are performed exist repeatedly.

It is just a logical consequence to use time-limited project teams, composed out of members with appropriate skills, for working on these topics. Once the task is completed, the project team will be broken up also and its members will no longer be on the payroll.
